Dr Saravanamuthu Poologanathan (Family Physician)

Citation Dr S Poologanathan

  • Dr. Saravanamuthu Poologanathan was born and bred in Jaffna and presently he is also a British citizen residing in the UK.

  • He is a past pupil of St. Patrick’s College Jaffna

  • After leaving school, found him graduating from the Katubedda Campus with a, Diploma in Civil Engineering in 1971. He has also worked in the field of engineering for a few months.

  • In 1972 he shifted course and entered Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, and graduated with an MBBS in 1978. He worked in Sri Lanka until 1983 in surgical specialities, latterly as a Registrar in Neuro Surgery. In 1984 he migrated to UK due to the unrest in the country.

  • In the UK he worked in different jobs mainly in surgical specialities and in anaesthesia.

  • He started GP training in 1990 and started his own GP practice in 1994.

  • Presently He is the Principal Family Physician (GP) at the Rush Green Medical Centre; a medical practice with a registered patient population of 3500 currently, He is a GP with experience in managing healthcare team consisting of clinical and non clinical staff  in running a busy general practice.

  • He completes forty years this year in the profession with experience in General medicine, anaesthetics and special interest in Minor surgery. Having been awarded the FRCS a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edin) in 1994, He continued his interest in surgery and currently is an accredited provider of Minor Surgery services. He pursues his interest in dermatological surgery and keeps up to date. The most recent training completed in Australia with a Certificate in Primary care Skin Cancer Management 2009 – in RACGP

  • His post graduate training in General Practice was in both UK and recently in Australia as well. He has obtained PG Qualifications from both the UK FRCGP and FRACGP. has a Diploma in Immediate Medical Care, 1989 (DIMC).

  • He is a trainer for Undergraduates and post grads in UK, Australia and Sri Lanka. He is

  • an accredited trainer for Final Year Medical students of a number of London based medical colleges. He is also honoured to be an OSCE Examiner for prestigious University College London (UCL).

  • He is an accredited Postgraduate trainer, training PG Masters in Family Medicine for Barts & London School of Medicine.

  • He does Peer reviewing for community based medical educators for Barts & London School of Medicine & Dentistry.

  • Is the past he was FY2 trainer for London Deanery and since 2015 he is an OSCE examiner for FRACGP.

  • Training Post Graduate Family Medicine MD trainees from Sri Lanka.

  • His Practice is accredited by the PGIM. He was the first GP from the UK, with a Training GP Practice, willing to accommodate our PG trainees.

  • His Passion is for Creating Family Medicine Centres and training family physicians to provide holistic care to local communities and his love for his motherland brought him back to SL during the ceasefire period.

  • I met him in 2005 when he came to Colombo and organised a Collaborative Initiative with the Medical Faculty in Jaffna and the CGPSL in April 2005. Since then I have had continuous dialogue with him specially in organising training for our Post graduates.

  • When I was in Board of Studies PGIM trying to find foreign training centers for the post MD trainees, he was the only one who gave us a positive response from the UK. And took in Dr Priyantha Halambarachchige and treated him as a member of his family when he went to UK.  He has accommodated 4 of our trainees so far in his practice. His practice is open to doctors for observation from SL. We are indeed very grateful to him.

  • Developing Primary Care in North East Sri Lanka. For the last 13 years he has been trying to improve the the primary care services in north and east. He with his friends continue to visit SL and hold training programmes specially for north and east. In 2005 He had already started building a model Family Practice Centre in Jaffna. It is now fully functional. He is presently the Director of the Institute of Family Medicine Jaffna. He is also a visiting lecturer at the Family Medicine Department, Jaffna.

  • I know that he continually tries to build bridges between UK GPs and Sri Lankan GPs .

  • He is a member of a number of professional Organisations.

  • He is also the Overseas Secretary – Medical Institute of Tamils UK, a UK registered charity involved in health education and healthcare.

  • In his leisure time he loves to travel.  He travels extensively in UK, Australia, France and Sri Lanka. He also likes Sri Lankan traditional food and is always glad of outings to restaurants of repute.

  • He is blessed with a daughter who is a GP in Australia and his wife a GP herself supports him in all his endeavors.

  • Mr. President I present Dr S Poologanathan for conferment of the highest honour of Honorary Fellow of the CGPSL.
